Blazers almost had Kidd, and a Poll

I know this rumor has been kicked around before, but Dave d'Alessandro is yet again reporting that a Jason Kidd for JJ/Raef deal was on the table, before Kidd scuttled it:

To me... the deal as structured sounds dubious. Even though Kidd is old; were that to go through we would be getting him for chump change.

Of course--if the Nets are so high on Jarrett Jack... one wonders if a Jack for Harris swap is possible.

The following deal works cap-wise once this summer (right now, trades are prevented, and the Nets players all have trade restrictions anyway):

NJ to Portland:

  • Devin Harris. The raison d'etre of the trade from our perspective.
  • Stomile Swift. Expiring contract in 2009. Dude sucks, but he's not the reason for doing this.
  • Trenton Hassell. Decent perimeter defender, we tried to sign him as a RFA a few years back but were matched. Expires in 2010; would be a good backup for Roy while Rudy gets ready.
  • Portland to NJ:
  • Jarrett Jack. Expiring rookie-scale contract
  • Raef LaFrentz. Big expiring contract
  • Channing Frye. Useful big body.
  • To me, the trade as structured sounds one-sided, in favor of the Blazers. I'm not sure why the Nets would prefer Jack over Harris, especially with Vince Carter around (maybe they want someone who will take the ball to the hole; something Vince has forgotten about...).

Earlier rumors concerning Outlaw going to New Jersey as part of a 3-way Kidd deal also make me think that more from the Blazers would be needed, and that d'Alessandro doesn't have the whole story.

But assuming the Nets like Jack... who would consider this trade?
