There's been a lot of talk about the rotation that Nate will use for our four main guards: Roy, Blake, Rudy, and Bayless. It appears that Rudy and Bayless are both basically SG who score and create. Roy is Roy. Blake is a distributor/shooter PG, but doesn't do much creating. It seems to me that the piece which is missing much consideration is Sergio.
Now granted, there is no doubt that the arrival of Rudy has something to do with Sergio's role on the team. However, KP and Nate had always been high on Sergio's potential, even though he was firmly rooted at the third PG slot all last season. Yet, with the passing of Jarrett Jack, it seems inevitable that Sergio will get more minutes (at the very LEAST at thestartof the season) than he has seen in years past.
Keep in mind that in 2006/07, Sergio averaged 3.3 assists to 1.1 turnovers in 12.9 minutes per game. Last year, obviously, these numbers slipped but I think that was a result of less playing time (and maybe even a few hard feelings).
It is my opinion that Sergio will be given the #2 PG slot (at least in name) to begin the season. Obviously Serg is a project, but I am excited to see what kind of progress he may have made in the off season. Also, the addition of fellow countryman Rudy may help motivate him. If Bayless takes minutes from him, so be it, but I believe Nate will give us another chance to see what Sergio can do this year when given significant minutes as a backup to Blake.
