Under the Radar off-season moves.

The short off-season of the Blazers has already yielded many different roads for the team to take. Dwight Howard, Harrison Barnes, Hassan Whiteside, and many others have been floated as players the Blazers could target in free agency. Given Neil Olshey's history of making effective, under the radar type moves, he will likely make a few moves that are not as big of a splash as the max free agent he will sign. Keeping this in mind, I will explore a few players that I think could be effective in the blazer's scheme.

First, there have been calls for a max-level center to be the main target of free agency, but I think that there is a guy who could be looked at, if the Blazers strike out on Whiteside and don't want to pay Howard a max-level contract. Boban Marjonovic could be a a decent addition to the roster. He is a giant. At 7'3" he makes Mason Plumlee and Ed Davis look tiny. Boban is a restricted free agent from San Antontio, which should be enough to entice fans to want to steal him away, but also his PER was the highest on the entire Spurs team (because he primarily played in garbage time). Marjonovic could be a somewhat cheap upgrade to the position, if Olshey's doesn't bring a max free agent to Portland.

An efficient and overlooked target (likely because of his not liking the blazer's picking Nolan Smith over him) could exist in Kenneth Faried. He doesn't like how Portland lied to him about drafting him, but I think the new management may be able to convince him to enjoy being in Portland. Faried is a powerful player at the power forward position. We have all seen his explosive style of play. If Denver is willing to trade him for either Plumlee or Davis and a pick, the blazer's could get an efficient and energetic power forward.

At small forward, I think Matt Barnes would be a good player that the blazer's could add for cheap. He might be able to fill a Chris Kaman type role for the team this upcoming year. He has praised Lilliard, and he could probably help the defensive attitude of the team.

The Blazers will likely keep Allen Crabbe, while letting Henderson leave because of his cap hold. If the Blazers decide to add a player at SG (which I don't think they need to), they could think about bringing Hendo back instead. He was able to create his own shots, and he was able to play good defense. I doubt that this happens, but he does add depth to the Portland team.

With a starting backcourt of Lillard and McCollum, the Blazers are able to score alot of points, but give up size at the SG position. Another problem with this arrangement is the lack of a capable backup point guard, which would allow Lillard and McCollum to play together more often. It would behoove the Blazers to add a dynamic (I mean this in the sense of adding another element to the blazer's team) player to relieve Dame. I think a good move would be to trade for Michael Carter Williams. The Bucks tried to trade him at the trade deadline because they plan to focus their efforts elsewhere. He would be a growing player with experience starting. His 3 point efficiency is not great, but he averaged a decent amount of points, rebounds, and assists last year. He could switch positions on defense because of his height, and he might be easy to aquire because he was injured in the last part of the season. The extra pick that the Blazers got from Cleveland might be enough to get him.

I doubt that all these moves happen, but they each might be possible. The roster has many ways it could improve, and I think looking at improvement as only possible through aqcuiring a max-level free agent, although we all want one, could minimize other improvements that Olshey accomplishes.
