Update (August 26th, 3:52 pm):ESPN’sAdrian Wojnarowski reportsthat The Cavaliers are expected to request an additional asset from the Celtics in order to complete the trade.

Without revisions to the original trade agreement, the Cavaliers could threaten to veto the trade, league sources said.

The Cavaliers' stance could trigger a standoff between Cleveland and Boston officials, forcing both organizations to weigh the consequences of letting the blockbuster trade implode.

The trade sendingKyrie Irvingto theBoston Celticsin exchange forIsaiah Thomas, other players, and a first-round pick may be in danger tonight. As reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, theCleveland Cavaliersare pondering their options following an examination in which Thomas’ hip injury raised concerns.

Per NBA rules, all trades are subject to completion of a physical by all players involved in the proposed deal. If the physical condition of a player does not satisfy the receiving team, the trade can be voided.

这是一个重大的协议为骑士队和Celtics. Irving and Thomas were major stars for each franchise. Thomas famously suited up for the Celtics the day after his sister died and showed loyalty to the team, only to watch them trade him as part of a larger package for Irving. If the Celtics have to welcome him back into the fold, explanations will be difficult. Meanwhile the Cavaliers were widely praised for the package they received for their disgruntled point guard in a reportedly-soft market. They’d have no easy way of recouping their loss through another trade if this deal went sour.

No matter Thomas’ condition, options remain. Cleveland could void the trade and pursue other suitors for Irving. The teams could revisit the trade with Cleveland demanding more to taking on Thomas as “damaged goods”. Or the Cavaliers could decide the reward is worth the potential risk and simply green-light the original deal.

Stay tuned as the story develops. We’ll keep you up to date as more information becomes available.
