Why the Blazers need to play Collins 30 minutes a night

To many Blazer fans, Zach Collins is a vital piece of the Blazer’s future. In his first season he brought a defensive mindset along with shooting that progressed throughout the year posting a reasonable 31% 3-point percentage along with 0.5 blocks per game in 16 minutes of play. If the Blazers want to break out of the West and become a contender, Zach Collins needs to play 30 minutes a night.

Collins has the tools to reach a borderline all-star with his 7’1" wingspan and his ability to hold his own on the perimeter against guards for periods of time. Just as a reminder, Collins is only 20 years old and hasn’t developed an NBA body yet. On draft day of 2017, Collins weighed in at only 220 lbs. Almost a year later he has put on 20 lbs and looks to be more of a force down low. Now is the time for him to get the NBA experience he needs, Summer League experience (and championships) won’t help him anymore.

Let’s face it, the Blazers are not the top in the West or even close.

Many predict they will end up in the bottom tier of the West, out of the playoffs. They can’t compete with the current roster of Golden State, Houston or maybe even Utah. Instead of exhausting their efforts to make the playoffs only to be disappointed in the first round, this season should be about developing their young talent. Increased minutes from Collins would help him reach his potential as a starting caliber big man who is versatile on defense, is able to bang in the post and hit the open jump shot.
