There is a lull in Blazers-related content right now, and I figured some of you might be as desperate for Blazers talk as I am, so here it goes!
From a talent and impact perspective, we have several relatively-unknown players on the roster going into this season, including Simons, Collins, Hezonja, Labissiere, Trent Jr., Little, and Hoard. I was going to exclude the two rookies from this as I don't think they've established a baseline yet, but maybe they have in some of your eyes given their draft positions.
Sure we've seen the potential in Simons and some quality minutes and flashes from Collins, but we don't know for sure what more they will bring this year or the impact it will have on the team's record. So, who do you see having the breakout year? The hyped-up young guard with two-way star potential? A guy from Croatian that's yet to play for a good team or a system that utilizes his talents? One of our young, lengthy bigs? An underrated rookie? Or maybe it'll be a late 2nd round pick from two years ago that will drop our jaws with his stellar play?
My hope is for Simons seeing as he's still so young and inexperienced, I see a large learning curve in his near future that makes me think this year might be rough but next year could be the emergence of a Blazer great. I would place my money on Hezonja because he reminds me of Batum with his raw play-making abilities and shooting potential. I think he's a guy that could end up quickly becoming out 6th man in Stotts system. He's gained 25-30lbs since entering the NBA, he's only 24 years old and he's gotten better at rebounding every year he's been in the NBA.
According toBasketball-Reference, here's what Mario has done his first 4 years, playing for two bad (very bad IMO) franchises. I think if he can play 20-22 mpg and average 16/5/5 he would be a lock for the breakout season winner, and at least in the conversation for 6th man and most improved. I think it's totally achievable for him to double his ppg playing off of guys like Dame, CJ, Nurk, Whiteside, Bazemore, and Hood. If he can get 10-12 shots a game and get 2-3 trips to the free-throw line each night he should get those number easily.
