FormerPortland Trail Blazersassistant coach, and brief interim head coach, Kaleb Canales has been named associate head coach of Mexico’s national teamaccording to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Longtime NBA assistant Kaleb Canales has been named the associate head coach for Mexico’s national basketball team, sources tell ESPN. Canales will assist Mexico in the upcoming FIBA Americas qualifying tournament for the 2023 World Cup.
Canales was the NBA’s first Mexican-American head coach with Portland in 2012, and more recently has been an assistant coach with the Mavericks,KnicksandPacers.
Canales was an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers for four seasons from the 2009-10 season through the 2012-13 season. He also took over and served as head coach after the mid-season firing of coach Nate McMillan. The Blazers went 8-15 over the last 23 games of that season under Canales, who went back to his role as assistant for one more year under new head coach Terry Stotts.
