Trendon Watford is the Jerami Grant we're looking for.

There's been a lot of noise about Jerami Grant lately and, frankly, I don't get it. For his age, experience, salary, etc., he's not not a very good player. He's slightly above league average at best, and he's gotten worse with higher usage.

I've been fairly impressed with Trendon Watford's play recently, so I decided to compare him to Jerami Grant. I looked at both players at Watford's current age of 21 for some potential fun conversations around trajectory, and then compared them at their actual ages to look at current usefulness.

For a physical comparison, Basketball Reference lists Jerami Grant, 28 years old, is 6-8, 210 lbs, and Draft Express lists a 7'2.5 wingspan. Trendon Watford, 21 years old, is 6-9, 240 lbs, and Sports Illustrated lists his wingspan at 7'2.25''.

At 21, Watford is the better player across the board almost without exception. There's really not much to dive into there. At their current ages, a passing glace would make you think Grant is the better scorer, but a closer look would tell you that's a product of attempts. When we look at points per FGA, Watford wins (1.36 to 1.30). This is probably a result of Watford being the better shooter (52% vs 43% FG%).

Speaking of shooting, Watfordis更好的射手电动车erywhere but from the 3pt line. However, Grant's 3pt percentage is not so great that you want him shooting often from range either (25% vs 35%). Overall, Watford wins out on shooting with a TS% of 0.587 vs 0.556.

As for off-ball usefulness, Watford gets more assists and more rebounds, especially offensive rebounds, which means his rebounding numbers are less likely to be inflated by stealing rebounds from teammates. Steals and blocks are basically identical.

My general conclusion from this is that at 21, Watford was clearly the better player, and I think right now there's a strong argument for him being the better player just statistically. When you factor in age, size, and cost, it's an absolute no brainer for me - going after Grant when we have Watford would be a terrible move.
