Now I know that Summer League is a chance for players to make a roster or perhaps a G-League roster. And I love watching our young players in a real game setting getting some good minutes.. But I’m getting sick of all these point guards trying to be point gods. Our team has 4 guys on the floor (would be 5 if Sharpe hadn’t hurt himself) who are on the roster and those 4 need to be getting the ball! You gotta let these guys go to work so we can see what we have, especially a guy like Jabari Walker. Portland is an organization that has to build/develop through the draft and that means actually putting those draftees in a position to have an effect on the game. Jabari has shown himself (in college) to be a gamer and a scorer, unlike anyone else on our SL roster.
If your organization uses a draft pick on a player, I don’t care if it was #60, you need to develop some sets and drive focus towards those draftees! Our offense last night was piss poor and our defense was a lame zone half the damn time. I’m not trying to win SL, I’m trying to create ballers! We are so thin at PF that we should really see who can be more than a benchwarmer. Are any of these guys multi-faceted? Do any of them show leadership qualities?
The next Summer League game, I want to see Jabari running as a point forward a few times, I want to see what happens when he gets 12 shots up, I want to see how he passes out of pressure…etc. I want to see what happens when the offense runs through Watford too. I want to see nothing but small ball sets out there, because playing even another second of Luka Garza is a waste of this teams youth development.
And finally, what’s the odds Sharpe comes back this SL? Looked like a tendon tweek in the elbow to me. I’d put his odds of playing again before the season at 29%. You?
