We've rightly spent most of our offseason discussion on 1. Making a big trade to bring back an impact starter (or two) and 2. Our draft picks. A starter is badly needed, but once that's addressed we clearly need to fill additional holes and add depth.
Here is one trade idea that could immediately solve our bench needs. This is assuming we trade Ant, and possibly our lotto pick and/or other assets for a frontcourt player.
Portland gets:Monte Morris, Daniel Gafford (trade exception), Corey Kispert (trade exception)
Washington gets:Nassir Little, Keon Johnson, Jabari Walker, #23 (or future 1st), #43, two future 2nd round picks
Washington has moved on from "Play-In Tommy" Sheppard and may look to build around youth. Even if not, re-signing Kuzma would likely put them around luxury tax territory, a bad place to be for a mediocre-at-best team. This gives them large savings, cost-controlled young players with upside, plus much needed draft assets.
Portland addresses one of our clearest needs with a more athletic backup big in Daniel Gafford, who could also start if needed. It also addresses two of our underrated needs: backup PG (a weakness for most of the Lillard era) and shooting depth (a weakness masked by the shooting prowess of our top players). Morris is one of the best backup PGs in the league and Kispert is an elite shooter. All three players would be amazing bench players who are fully capable of starting as well.
We would have a deep and well-rounded bench (a rarity in recent Blazer history) of Gafford/Watford/Kispert/Thybulle/Morris and still have movable contracts if we wanted to make a change at the deadline.
