The comeback is progressing so well that his parents are planning to attend the Wolves' exhibition game Saturday night against Chicago at Target Center.

"Everybody is excited to see me back playing again," Roy said after practice Thursday. "It made me feel good to know I'm giving them something to do back home."

The Blazers released Roy using the amnesty clause in December 2011 and he spent the 2011-12 in unofficial retirement before signing a 2-year contract with the Timberwolves last summer.

前波特兰径燃烧器和当前明尼苏达·斯坦布尔郡卫队罗伊于周二在NBA电视上的Vince Cellini和Dennis Scott采访了Brandon Roy。

前波特兰Trail Blazers和Current Minnesota Timberwolves Guard Brandon Roy是采访 by vince cellini 丹尼斯斯科特在星期二的 nba tv 上。

he said it would be great to go down there and do it. I flew down there and had the procedures done and ever since then I've just been feeling really good. I started meeting with teams, Minnesota showed a lot of interest and I was just happy to get a deal done and I feel extremely good being here.

How will your game change?

Honestly, right now and all summer long, I've been preparing to not have to take a step back with my game. I'll be honest, some of the lift isn't what it used to be. But my explosiveness, my explosiveness to get to the basket, is good. More than anything, I think I'm a lot smarter of a basketball player. The NBA season is long and my body isn't what it used to be. Right now I feel great. Me and coach [Rick] Adelman are going to sit down before the season and communicate throughout the year about how I'm feeling and what's the best way to get the most out of me. I feel great, right now there's nothing holding me back, I can go out there and play as much as I like.

How did you keep hope alive when knees were hurting?

The biggest thing was I went back over the situation. My last year in Portland, I had two knee scopes halfway through the year. I got down on myself and at the same time people around me got down on me. Also, I just had to say, 'Hey Brandon, you just came off two knee surgeries, you have to give your body some time to heal. And then after it heals you have to give yourself a chance to start strengthening it. Once I started to get back in the weight room, started working with trainers, started building up my quads and my calves, started to get my flexibility back.

I went in the gym with a couple of friends of mine and I was like, 'Be honest, how do I look?' And they said, 'You would be crazy if you didn't play basketball again.' I felt really good but sometimes you need that outside opinion just watching you. It was tough, being out of the game, having to constantly remind yourself that you're capable of it. Now that I'm in Minnesota, working out with my teammates and they say, 'Hey man, you look great, we can't wait to get out on the court with you,' it gives me even more confidence. It's something I'm going to have to continue to build. I'm excited about training camp, I'm going to try to improve there, and then look forward to my first preseason game.

Playing with Kevin Love

I'm really excited. He was the first guy to text me when I was meeting with Minnesota. The first thing I asked [Timberwolves president] David Kahn was, 'How does Love feel that I fit in?' He was just real excited to have me. He texted to say he would love to have me on the team and he was looking forward to training camp and improving. That made me feel great. Kevin Love had an incredible season last year and to cap it off with the Olympic team and all those great players. I just want to come in next year and help them make the next step, which is to get to the playoffs. Just so he can get that experience because I think he deserves it.

Leadership that you bring as a veteran

I hope it will be great. My biggest thing is that I try to lead by example. I try to be one of the first guys in the gym. I try to make sure guys see me in the weight room, see me getting my treatment. When I'm on the court, I just try to perform. I'm not one of those rah rah guys. When I'm playing, I try to do the things to help my team win. When guys see that, they'll want to be a part of it. Right now, we've got a great group of guys. Management has done an unbelievable job of bringing in a lot of guys good pieces that fit. Guys who have been a part of winning. Hopefully just leading by example, pushing guys to get better and wanting to take that next step. Understanding that it's not just going to happen because we have good players, we have to get in and put the work in, starting now, and try to carry it over to training camp.

Seen Ricky Rubio?

I sat out last year so I had a chance to watch a lot of basketball. It's funny, when I was watching, I wasn't watching like I used to, like, I have to compete against this guy I want to see what he can do. I was watching as a fan. I watched as a fan last year, not just all the big stars but especially guys like Ricky Rubio, I was very interested to see how he would perform in the NBA. He was one of those guys who people kind of got down on because his numbers weren't great overseas, but when he came here, he was just great. The biggest thing that stood out to me is that he's a winner. He will go out there and score two points but he wants to get 13 or 14 assists, he wants to get his teammates going. Me, sitting at home, of course that's the type of guy you want to play with, he can get you shots.

Making this comeback, I'm looking forward to Rubio getting over his knee injury. We want him to take his time and come back when he's 100 percent ready to get out there. But I'm excited to play with a guy like him, he can create for me. A guy like Love, I can get some pick and rolls, he can pop and get some easy shots. There's a lot of good pieces here and I'm excited to be back in the NBA fold.

The Blazers released Roy using the amnesty clause in December 2011. He sat out the 2011-12 season and agreed to sign a 2-year contract with the Timberwolves back in July.

Roy, 28, spent five seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers before the team used the amnesty clause to waive him in December 2011. He cleared the amnesty bidding process, thereby becoming an unrestricted free agent, but did not play during the 2011-12 season as he unofficially "retired" with ongoing problems with both of his knees. The 3-time All-Star and 2007 Rookie of the Year holds career averages of 19.0 points, 4.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Here's a full transcript of the press conference.

Kahn's comments are the first and last statements in blockquote. Everything else is Roy.

David Kahn's opening statement

Better late than never. This one kind of came out of left field. It wasn't until late this spring that Brandon decided he was ready to come back to basketball after being away for a season. All I can say is that I'm thrilled that he chose us and not somebody else to resume his career. I feel very fortunate today that he's a member of our team. I think he's going to help us in innumerable ways, well beyond the basketball court. In the locker room, off the court, we still have a very young team as you all know. His experience in our league plus the person that he is, the kind of quality and character of him and his family will really be a great help to our organization.

Brandon Roy's opening statement

I'm excited to be back in the NBA and be a part of this organization. It was a tough season to sit out but after thinking about it, I wanted to start preparing myself to make a comeback. I didn't want it to be an overnight decision. So I decided to start working out for about two months before I would make my official decision to come back. After two months of pushing myself, my body felt really great, it responded really well. After doing a procedure down in Los Angeles, Regenicon (sp.?), an injection, I decided to reach out to some teams and let them know I was ready to return. I got a chance to work out in Los Angeles with coach Bill Bayno and David was there and we had a chance to go to lunch and talk.

I knew this was a place that I really wanted to be a part of. Not just with David but coach Adelman, the pieces they have here. I wanted to be part of a team that I could assist and really take that next step. I'm really excited to be here, my wife is here with me, we're excited to being a part of this community and we're excited to getting out, connecting with the fans, and putting a great team out there on the floor to give them something to cheer about.

When you made decision to retire, was it final in your mind?

Well, it never really was officially my decision to retire. With the process in Portland, I met with the team doctor, we talked for awhile, we have a really, really good relationship. He's a guy that's been working with me for five years with my knees. It was a situation where I went in for the physical, he thought it would be in my best interests to stop playing basketball because of my knees. We pretty much left it up to the team to decide if they wanted to pursue the medical retirement route. After a week, they decided to use the amnesty. For me, it was never that I was retired. My knees were a situation that I was going to have to think about if I wanted to continue playing. After a few months of sitting out, I decided, 'Hey, I don't want to stop playing basketball.' It's something I want to continue going forward with. It's never a situation where I said, 'I'm done forever.' It was more of a pause.

Tell us more about the procedure and how many minutes can you play?

The first thing that I noticed with the Regenicon procedure is the recovery. It really helps swelling. What it allows me to do is workout extremely hard and I can continue to workout the next day. If on Monday I work out for two or three hours, the next day I don't feel like there's soreness there. It kind of starts all over again. It really helps recovery. That's the main thing I was looking for. Just playing, I feel great. In the past, there would be days where there would be swelling and that would cause some stiffness. Regenicon has helped take that away. Now I can prepare and I can work extremely hard to get to the level I want to be at. It's worked really well. It's something the doctors have said it usually lasts up to a year and a half. It's all natural, it's something you can do as much as you would like.

What made you want to undergo that procedure?

I had heard about Kobe Bryant going over and doing it in Germany. I wasn't quite sure how it would work. Then watching him play this year, I thought, heck, he looked great this season. Hopefully that can help me. I wanted to wait. I didn't want to do it in December or January because I wanted to give my body some time to rest naturally.

I started working out two months before I even went and did the procedure. I wanted to see how my body would feel. It felt really good so I went and did the procedure. I'm not saying I'm Kobe Bryant but my body feels really good. I've been working out ever since, there hasn't been any swelling. I'm excited that I got it done. The main reason for doing it is that I wanted to play. My everyday walking around I was fine, but if I wanted to play and play at a high level that I expect for myself I thought that [procedure] would be necessary to do.

Can you be great again?

That's the goal. That's the only reason I'm coming back. I told David when we met, I said I wouldn't be coming back if I didn't think I couldn't reach a high level of basketball. You say great, I say high level. I want to play at a high level. Right now, my body is giving me all signs that I can do that.

Your play at recent summer pro-am?

There wasn't anything that I couldn't do. I was just excited to be back on the court. I played in pick-up games but that was the first game I played where we had referees and things like that. It was just exciting to be back hooping and kind of attacking and playing against somewhat defensive schemes and make game-related plays. I didn't hold back anything. A little winded, being the first real game. But I was excited, there's nothing that I'm telling myself mentally that I can't do on the court. I just go out there and try to make plays and make reads.

Other teams looking at you -- why Minnesota?

A big reason is David sitting here. Coach Adelman. When they came to visit with me, I thought the meeting went great. But then talking with people around the NBA, they said, 'If you have an opportunity to play for coach Adelman, you should do it.' They really believed in him and the way he coaches and the way he can manage players who have injuries, still get the most out of them.

And just looking at the team -- I wanted to be a part of a team that was good and that I could step in and help assist take that next step. It's not a situation where I want to be a tenth man. I want to be able to go out and work and be a big part of the team taking the next step. I thought the pieces are right here. David talked about a lot of guys that they were trying to work to get, getting Andrei Kirilenko is huge. The pieces are there, you can tell they want to go forward with this team, continue to improve it and I would love to be a part of that improvement.

How did you begin process as a player to determine where you would make comeback?

My first step is letting my agent handle it. We wanted to see what teams were interested. It was a weird process. I never really said 'I'm coming back.' It was, 'I'm thinking about coming back.' Just to kind of put feelers out there to see what teams were really excited and believed in me. Minnesota was that team. Along with some other ones. But they continued to call, watch me workout. When they said, 'Hey Brandon, sky's the limit here.' That really made me feel good. I thought some teams maybe wanted me to play a small role but Minnesota said you can come in and earn as big of a role as you want. That was really important for me.

Just feeling comfortable. They have coach Billy Bayno and Terry Porter, a lot of guys I'm familiar with. Easy transition for me.

Going back full-circle to the team that actually drafted you?

It's kind of funny. I go to my mom's house and she has the big picture of me on Draft day and I have a Timberwolves hat on. Being in Portland, it was kind of weird wearing another team's hat. Draft day was an exciting time. I went up on the stage, I shook the commissioner's hand and I did some interviews for Minnesota TV. In the middle of the interview, they were like, 'Cut, he's been traded.' [laughs] I was like, 'OK.' Here I was: 'I love Minnesota, Kevin Garnett' and they're like, 'cut, cut.' It was a little strange and then me and Randy Foye were in the back, he had been picked right behind me. We kind of talked, 'Should we switch hats?' I'm like, 'Nah, it's your Draft hat, it's my Draft hat, maybe we should keep them.' The people in the back end up giving us both hats. To go full circle and to go to my mom's house and see the Timberwolves hat and to know that's where I'm playing, it's real exciting. I'm just happy to be here and be a part of the organization for a little longer than 30 minutes. Hopefully nobody is yelling 'cut' back there.

Is this a playoff team?

I don't want to come out and put that pressure on the team. We have a lot of really nice pieces. The first step is to get everybody here and start to build that chemistry. [Kevin] Love is with the USA team, he's focused on that. [Ricky] Rubio, Kirilenko is doing the same thing with his [Russian] team. We want to get guys in early to start building that chemistry. I feel like with the pieces we have we can definitely take that next step to getting into the playoffs. We want to work to that goal, we don't want to talk about it. We want to work and prove it on the floor.

How many minutes can you play? Are you a 35 minute per game guy?

I think, even before I had any knee problems in the NBA, me and coach would always sit down and talk about minutes. It's a long season and you want guys to be fresher down the stretch. I'm sure it's something that me and coach will talk about. My goal is, yeah, I would still love to be around that 35 minute mark. Really, whatever the team needs. I don't want those situations where coach has to say, 'We're in a tough game but you're at your minute limit.' That was something I had to deal with in my last season in Portland. That was really hard. Physically I feel good. I want to play as much as possible but at the same time be smart because it's a long season and we want to be at our best down the stretch.

David, how much better do you feel about the roster compared to end of 2011-12 season?

I feel better across the board. I think we've addressed the weaknesses that were uncovered late in the season after Ricky's injury at the wing position. I think we've added ball-handling, shooting at the wings. We're very versatile. I think it allows coach to have a lot of different looks with his line-ups. He can go big, he can go small. He can play Brandon at the two, he can play Brandon at the three. He can play Kirilenko at the three, Kirilenko at the four, Derrick [Williams] at the three, Derrick at the four. The list goes on of guys who can play multiple positions. As coach demonstrated, he likes to go small and we can go small very effectively. If you watched the Finals last year, that seems to be a very effective weapon these days. I think we've addressed some weaknesses if not all of them. I still want to see what we can do later this summer, a tweak here, a tweak there, maybe even something big to make it even better still.

似乎这么长时间以前,因为从那以后发生了如此之多。 That process was a tough one for me. With the whole lockout, everyone knows how that was on the players and on the fans. When the lockout was finally lifted, I started working out and preparing myself a little more seriously for the season. i had some good conversations with coach Nate, Larry Miller and Chad Buchanan. I was just looking forward to the year. When I went down there to do my physical with the team doctor and the trainers, they thought it would be in my best interests to maybe stop playing basketball. They thought my knees weren't done at that moment but they thought they were progressively getting worse. It was something that really concerned me.

I ended up talking with my wife, talking with the team and we just tried to find out the best way going forward. It was a difficult situation. It's not easy to walk away from basketball at any age, but especially at 27. It was really hard for me. I worked with those doctors for years, I trusted their opinion. We thought it was the best thing to do.

That first month or two, I didn't really want to watch basketball. i didn't want to play, I was sitting at the house, trying to do alternative things. That bug keeps messing with you and I just started to slowly start playing basketball, playing with my cousins, my friends. The more I would play, the more I would think: I don't quite want to give this up yet. That's why I started the process of working out a little more seriously to see where I was at.

What's happened between December and today with your knees?

Before I get into the Regenicin [Spelling?] and plasma treatment, the number one thing that happened was rest. You can't look at the rest for eight months... I've really had over a year of resting. After the season ended, I didn't play much basketball. Coming back last year after having two knee surgeries, I was really discourage because I was trying to play. My will wanted me to be able to do more. It was just too hard after having two knee surgeries mid-season. The NBA is hard enough when you're healthy. Coming back after two knee surgeries and trying to play, I thought I got a little down on myself.

Resting after the season, getting my confidence back, I felt like my knees were getting better. Then sitting out a whole 66-game season, the number one thing was rest. I was getting back in the gym, two days in a row, three days in a row, next thing you know, I'm going two times a day and my knees aren't feeling worse.

Talking with my agent, he was like, 'let's do everything you can to make sure you're 100 percent sure that this is what you want to do.' I went down to L.A. and working with a doctor who works with a few players, I don't want to get into their names, but they all said it worked wonders for them. After the first day of doing it, I was laying in my hotel room and I said, 'Man, this can't feel this good. I can't possibly really feel this good.' I ended up finishing the treatment, which is five injections, and I just feel great.

Since then, I have been in the gym working, taking steps to build. I don't want to peak right now, I'm not in top shape right now, I want to build and get back into basketball mode. Ever since then I've been feeling great. You know me, I wouldn't be going back out there if I wasn't ready to play at a high level.

Regenicin [spelling?] -- plasma treatment injection?

Not to go into too much detail, I don't want to explain it like I'm a doctor, but it's something where they draw my blood, they spin it, they pull some different things out of it... they inject it right back into the joint. It was five shots. It was on each of my knees. Ever since then, it feels great. I was smiling going in there to get the next one and I don't really like getting shots. I was so excited about how I was feeling, it was like the first day of school for me.

Any idea on how much you plan to play?

Right now I'm preparing to play. If that's starter's minutes, that's great. Talking with Minnesota, we're not going to put any limitations on anything. We're going to go in there and just work and see how I feel. I'm envisioning coming back and playing. I haven't told myself it's not going to be this many minutes. I thought my last season with Portland, I was kept at a minute restriction. It really bothered me. I wanted to play more, I wanted to play more. They thought it was best that I didn't.

Right now... I told coach [Rick] Adelman I'm ready to go. It might be in the long-term best interest that I'm not a 38-minute guy but I'm looking forward to it. I think it's a great situation for me. You know me man, I'm going back out there to play. I wouldn't be coming back if I was going to be a 15, 20 minute guy. I would continue to sit out. I think my future is bright. I don't want to get into too much talking about it, I want to go out there and prove myself.

Ever consider a return to Portland?

With the amnesty rule I'm not allowed to go back to Portland until 2014-15. It was just never an option. If it was, of course I would be back in Portland... Going into the process, I knew right away I wouldn't be able to play back there.

This isn't about the money is it?

Not at all. I try to live humbly. I don't spend a lot of money. I've done a great job of saving so this was just strictly a matter of coming back and getting back into the flow of basketball. I love hoop. The first day I went back and started playing, it was me and a bunch of family. I came home with the biggest smile on the face. My wife was like, 'You really had a good time tonight, didn't you?' I was like, 'I had a blast.' Just playing the game. I love playing basketball. To be able to play basketball pain-free is an even greater joy. This is not a financial thing, it's just a love for the game.

Last time you played pain-free?

I would say before my junior year. I had a knee procedure in high school and it was just one. I bounced back from that fine. Before my junior year at Washington, we were doing some offseason workouts and I felt great. I was just in the best shape of my life. I was running and jumping, that was probably the most exciting time for me. I tore my meniscus my junior year on my right side, that's when playing with pain started creeping in. I knew that it was going to be something that was part of my game.

After I got those injections it was the first time I can bend my knees really good again. I couldn't remember the last time I was able to do that. I've been able to accomplish a lot, even with pain. That's what gives me more satisfaction, looking at things now. Being able to overcome so much, there's no reason why I don't think I'll be able to continue to do it.

Other teams interested in you?

The teams that were most serious about me and willing to step out on the ledge and take the risk, right after Minnesota was Golden State. My agent Bob Myers went to Golden State... He knows me personally. He knows when I say something that I'm really going to back that up. Golden State was right there. Dallas Mavericks, I met with their people, I talked with them. I really leaned hard and looked at them. They have a great medical staff. I met so many great people and teams through this process, Kevin Pritchard, GM in Portland when I was there, he was a guy who really believed in me. He's in Indiana now, I talked with him. I talked to the Chicago Bulls, I had a great talk with coach Thibodeau... At the end you can only pick one, and I thought Minnesota was the best fit for me going forward.

Why Minnesota?

The number one reason, you look at the team, you look at Rubio and Love, big Pekovic, the number one reason, their owner and coach, their trainer, they flew out to meet with me. We sat and we talked for three and a half or four hours. Two hours we talked basketball. The other two we talked about family, relationships, just really getting to know one another. I felt comfortable.

After that meeting, I was thinking it was going to be hard to turn these guys down. They just believed in me. They really believed in me and had that confidence in saying that Brandon Roy can come back and still be a good player in this league. I'm the type of guy where you can get more out of me if you have that confidence that I can go out and really play well. They had it, from Day One. They've been all over this, wanted to get it done.

Will you start?

I didn't make any demands or ask a question about starting. Not to sound like I know I'm going to start, but I feel like when I go in and it's time to work, I just always feel it's going to be hard to keep me out of the starting lineup. That's just my mentality as a player and how I feel right now. I didn't ask any questions about if I would start or I'm demanding I would start. It didn't even go that far. It was just what I hope to bring to this team and hopefully it's enough to get into that starting lineup and be able to play. And not just be in the starting lineup, maybe get a few plays called for me. [laughs] I just plan to work hard and put coach in a position where he has to play me.

Your comeback is bittersweet for Blazers fans

I think the first thing I would say is I absolutely loved the Portland Trail Blazers fans. I can't point out one moment that sticks out more than another because they all were great but I just keep remembering back to Game 4 last year. Everybody remembers the game but I remember the moments and the days leading up to that game. We flew back from Dallas and I was really down because we were down 0-2, I wasn't playing and I made some comments. The fact that maybe the fans may turn and say 'Brandon's selfish.' Everybody supported me. I was getting letters on my gate from fans, saying, 'Brandon, we love you, stick with it, have confidence.'

It was amazing for me to have that feeling. That was the last chapter of them always supporting me. They expected more out of me than I expected of myself. I love the Blazers fans. I can't say it enough. They did so much, not only for me, but for my family, making me feel comfortable there. Nobody will ever replace the moments we were able to have together. They will always have that special place in my heart.
