“你必须改变现状,”当被BlazerEdge问及这是否正确时,Stotts说time to alter his early substitution patterns and first quarter rotations. "I don't necessarily have a set rotation other than to try to keep a couple of the starters on the floor at the same time, a couple of our scorers. I'll re-think that."
"We definitely have had a trend of [starting slow] lately," Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge said, after finishing with 20 points and 14 rebounds. "We have to figure out how to shake it. We always start a little slow and then find a way to come back. If we have better starts then we won't have to fight so hard to come back."
Price over Smith going forward should be a given and Smith should consider himself fortunate if he isn't released immediately because of impulse frustration. Even though Lillard is already averaging 38.4 minutes per night, the next most obvious rotation tweak would be to extend his minutes. If not by playing him more overall, then by playing him deeper into the first quarter. Staggering Lillard's playing time has been very logical and successful at times but by pulling him midway through the opening period, Stotts runs the risk of Lillard not getting acclimated early or being tempted (unconsciously) to hold back until he re-enters later in the game.
One might argue that playing Lillard through the first nine or 10 minutes (or more) of the game and staggering those around him could help Portland avoid the early pitfalls. Is Stotts getting the most of out Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews late in first quarters if they are at the mercy of a lesser point guard? Could Price have an easier go of it if his minutes came exclusively against reserves?
"That's on him," Aldridge told Blazersedge, when informed that Stotts was weighing possible changes. "I don't know. He's the coach. If that's what he feels he has to do, that's fine. I've just got to focus on myself, the starting five, getting us off better."
Lillard told Blazersedge that he is open to having his role adjusted, if Stotts deems that the solution, but that it would be an oversimplification to say that his presence on or off the court accounts for the holes.
"I'm comfortable with whatever [Stotts] decides," Lillard said. "I know at the end of the game, I'll end up playing a good amount of minutes, whatever he decides to do or make happen, I'm fine with that."
He continued: "I don't think it has anything to do with me being on the floor. It's us as a group. Sometimes it's when I'm on the floor, we have spurts where we have bad defensive possessions and we're not scoring the ball, and sometimes it's when other guys are on the floor. I don't think I should be singled out. Whatever happens out there, there's always five players on the court."
Class answer, no two ways about that.
There was an explosive moment during Stotts' press conference, when he was asked, albeit somewhat unintentionally, about how many minutes he was playing Lillard, Aldridge, Matthews and Batum. Stotts quickly became animated and pledged not to answer that question ever again, repeating four times in less than a minute that the minutes load on his key players was not impacting the team's performance.
"Once again, I'm going to say this for everybody," he began, as if he was lecturing a class of second graders. "The minutes is not... we have energy in the fourth, we're coming back. I can throw numbers at you. There have been over 100 players in the last 20 years to average over 40 minutes. The minutes is not an issue. LaMarcus Aldridge averaged two more minutes per game two years ago. 16 of the last 20 Rookies of the Year have averaged over 35 minutes per game. It's been done. Nic is 24 years old. The minutes is not an issue. I'm not going to answer that question any more about heavy minutes for the starters. Minutes is not the issue."
The issue has been raised over and over and Stotts' short temper for the topic is understandable given that the bench issues were identified so early this season. He has no options, he knows it, everyone knows it, and he's reduced to juggling deck chairs when it comes to his substitutes. it wasn't just Smith who gave him nothing. Outside of Luke Babbitt, who scored 11 points in 24 minutes, the rest of his reserves combined to produce four points and six rebounds in 30 combined minutes.
Portland's second-half comeback, which included a 17-4 run to close the third quarter, capped by a buzzer-beating three from Lillard, and a 12-0 run late in the fourth quarter, came up short. After similar attempts have failed recently, this one actually felt a bit hollow.
"We won five games in a row and we lost them all back," said Lillard, who finished with 26 points, 10 assists and three rebounds.
"Too many turnovers, that's on us," Batum said, after tallying seven points, seven rebounds, five assists and four turnovers while shooting just two-for-nine. "We've got to take care of the ball, be more focused on offense, do the job on defense. We can't let a team score 60 points in the first half at home."
"We've got some games that are still at the house," Aldridge said of his team's upcoming schedule, which includes four of the next five at the Rose Garden. "Let's start there."
Random Game Notes
Terry Stotts' Post-Game Comments
Opening Comments
Game got away from us at the end of the first quarter. That was a bad stretch for us. The second quarter wasn't much better. We can't give up 32 points, 30 and 32 in back to back quarters, 62 in the first half. It's kind of a Groundhog's Day. We get down, battle back, put ourselves in a position to win, then we've lost the last few games. We have to remedy it. It's collectively, players and coaches, we can't put ourselves in that position.
Remedy include rotation change or substitution pattern switch
I don't know right now. Some of it depends on the opponent. But yeah. You've got to change things up. I don't necessarily have a set rotation other than to try to keep a couple of the starters on the floor at the same time. A couple of our scorers. I'll rethink that.
Turnovers
Milwaukee does a great job with turnovers and blocked shots. You saw that tonight. That's what they do well. We had four turnovers in the first four minutes. We were able to withstand that stretch but it caught up with us. We had two turnovers in the second quarter but they still scored 32. You never want to turn the ball over. It was a key of the game going into the game. We remedied that in the second quarter and they still scored 32.
.500 forty games in
If you had asked me at the beginning of the season, maybe, but not right now. We've shown we can compete with a lot of good teams in this league, we've beaten a lot of good teams, it's difficult to say yes after losing five in a row.
Starters minutes
No. Once again, I'm going to say this for everybody, the minutes is not... we have energy in the fourth, we're coming back. Minutes is not the issue.
Leonard
He wasn't 100 percent. He was able to go. I just felt like I wanted to give him a couple more days. Joel had been in the rotation. I gave Joel the first shot. He'll probably play in Monday's game. The way the game evolved with us getting down and having to play Luke at four and spreading the court. There really weren't any minutes for him.
No-call on LaMarcus Aldridge tripping late
He stepped on LaMarcus's foot. I thought it was a missed call. It was unfortunate because we would have been shooting two, down four with 33 seconds. We're going to get the ball back. That was unfortunate to say the least.

正如你所收集,开拓者就出来了平再次今晚。 Actually, "flat" doesn't do it. The Bucks came out hunting the Blazers from the opening tap. The Blazers made like like Bambi's mom. One shot--in this case probably provided by Ersan Ilyasova somewhere in the first period--and it's all over.
The Blazers turned over the ball like it was pyramid-shaped. They let Milwaukee run out. 14 of the Bucks' 30 points in the first period came after turnovers. The only reason that stat doesn't look mind-numbing horrible is because Portland's defense was otherwise so porous that 14 doesn't quite make 50% of 30. That's called disguising your flaws. The aforementioned Ilyasova hit a variety of mid-to-long-range jumpers, adding insult to injury. When that wasn't happening Brandon Jennings began a night-long dismantling of Portland's defense. From the get-go Portland's smalls and bigs communicated like a recently-divorced couple on the defensive end. The result was weak, split double-teams and frequently-blown screen coverage. The interior rotations weren't any better, coming late if at all. The Bucks shot 32 free throws in this game. The Blazers also ended up with 32 so it wasn't a one-way street, but Milwaukee's interior defense was otherwise far superior to Portland's.
That nice Bucks interior "D", anchored by Larry Sanders, kept LaMarcus Aldridge and J.J. Hickson frustrated all night. When either Portland big managed to get the ball in the lane--either off the dribble or via offensive rebounding--the Bucks smothered them. Sanders stayed in front and bothered the shot while 1 or 2 exterior defenders collapsed inward to prevent dribbling or anything fancy. The result was a bevy of forced, twisting attempts from 2 feet, most of which drew rim and no more. Aldridge did draw 10 foul shots but the Bucks muffled his offense otherwise.
Also on the offensive absentee list: Nicolas Batum. After a long string of games making his mark in one way or another, Batum was muted here, shooting 2-9 with 5 assists and 4 turnovers. His biggest contribution outside of 7 rebounds was a pretty second-half three-pointer. But the Blazers needed way more than one moment from him and way, way more than the couple moments they got from Aldridge.
While the forwards and Hickson got handled, Portland's starting guards tried to step up and fill in the gap. Damian Lillard took 21 shots tonight, Wesley Matthews 18. Together that's 39 of Portland's 81 shot attempts, just shy of half. This led to 47 points between them but they gave up 43 to their counterparts. Granted, not all of the Jennings-Ellis scoring was directly attributable to Portland's guards. The forwards were slow down the court and, as we said, the interior help just wasn't there. It's safe to say, though, that the Lillard-Matthews duo played like you'd have expected the Milwaukee guards to play: lots of shots, not a great percentage hit, not much defense.
Outside of Luke Babbitt Portland's bench barely played and barely contributed, except for the bad.
Now...the Blazers did make a big second-half comeback after their embarrassing 45-62 first half. As is their habit lately they fell behind by 20+ and then started charging when the opponent relaxed. They got some ball-movement going, got on a hot streak from three-point land...you know the routine. They even got an advantage when Sanders went brain-dead and got himself tossed by referee Danny Crawford for arguing a call with 3:08 remaining in the third. But all of that put together amounts to a high-wire act, desperate dashes near the end of quarters to make disaster look not so disastrous. With the margin for error so small the complete comeback is hard to achieve. In this case Jennings took matters into his own hands in the fourth, much as Kyrie Irving did in the Cavaliers game a couple days ago. 13 for Milwaukee's point guard in the final stanza was more than enough to cut short Portland's comeback.
At this point some folks will probably be thinking I'm being too harsh. Truth be told, even had the Blazers come back to win this game the lesson would have been the same. They just would have gotten lucky in avoiding the consequences. Once Portland let the Bucks run all over them in the first half, carrying out exactly the game plan they diagrammed en route to a 21-point lead, nothing good was going to happen here regardless of winning and losing. If the Blazers don't find a way to start games better they might as well start ticking off the "L's" right now. It's not just a matter of random cold shooting...what we're seeing is a total disintegration of team and individual effort early in games while opponents cavort all over the court. When you're tossing the ball right into the hands of the opponent, when you can't even dribble up the floor without coughing it up, when you can see guys come into the frame 3 seconds too late to make an attempt at a play...these aren't talent issues. There's a switch flipped off somewhere. Portland better find it before midway through the third period or they might as well not bother.
Individual Notes
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 20 off of the strength of 10-10 free throw shooting. He fired 5-12 from the field and got squashed inside. He did grab 14 rebounds, by far his strongest contribution of the evening. He was one of the chief culprits of Late Defense-Gate. Part of that may have been fatigue or effort, another part Ilyasova playing like an All-Star and needing to be watched constantly. Ilyasova certainly looked like the better power forward tonight.
Nicolas Batum shot 2-9 for 7 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 turnovers, and the overall impression of, "Where was he?"
J.J. Hickson had a fine statistical night with 5-10 shooting, 15 points, 12 rebounds. He wasn't able to keep the Milwaukee centers away from the rim when they defended, though, which caused all manner of problems.
Damian Lillard shot 9-21, 4-9 from distance (including a beautiful buzzer-beating three to end the third period), 5-6 from the foul line, dished 10 assists, and committed only 3 turnovers in his 42 minutes (which was good for this game). He clearly had the best game of any Blazer. Caveats: defense and defense. Oh, and defense. The Blazers need to help him almost every time down the floor on nights like this. That's not helping their own effort.
Wesley Matthews shot 8-18 but only 1-8 from the arc. He did have 2 steals and 4 assists, also 3 turnovers with his 21 points. Somebody needed to score and since the forwards weren't having any success, Matthews stepped up.
Luke Babbitt played 24 minutes and hit 3-8 three-pointers. The Bucks were leaving him mostly open--not closing quickly enough--so he took them. He scored 11 points tonight, which almost triples the combined output of the rest of the bench. That story was so sad it was almost comical. Coach Stotts kept putting different players in only to watch them all fall apart in one way or another. It was like trying to build a house of cards on a canoe in the ocean. The worst example was Nolan Smith, who had perhaps the worst 3 minutes of basketball anybody has ever seen. He committed 3 turnovers during that time, every one of them leading to easy breakaway points for the Bucks. It was like seeing a young pitcher come in and give up 4 home runs on 5 pitches. Not 5 at-bats, 5 pitches. You don't want to pull him because that's not representative of his ability and you don't want him to lose confidence, but on the other hand...man.
OK, so it's Washington at home on Monday. This is literally...honestly...truly the last (what you'd call) easy game for a month. After that you're looking at near-.500 teams, playoff contenders, elite squads, and Dallas on the road until the Blazers face Charlotte on March 4th. It would be nice if the Blazers could come out strong and win that Wizards game. In fact at this point it may be mandatory.

That brought Lillard back into the game, and the Blazers scored 7 straight points to close the quarter down "only" 11.
I stepped out of the room for a few minutes. What the #%$& happened?
by Chuck Nevitt
Second Quarter: The Blazers were able to cut the deficit to 10, but single-digits were elusive. Lillard helped settle the team down, while Batum did some cleanup work, and the deficit was only 9 halfway into the quarter. Lillard rolled his ankle slightly, but only had a short bench stint before returning. The Blazers just couldn't slice into that lead though, as the Bucks worked the ball inside, got a few breaks, and headed to the locker room with a 17 point lead. Their 62 halftime points were a season high, as the Blazers were broken down inside repeatedly.
Ellis goes left then goes right and Barton stays in front of him. Good instincts and wing span. If he ever learns how finish at the rim and draw fouls he’ll be the new Stacey Augmon.
by Hipster Olympic Team!
Third Quarter: Let's save some time: 6 minutes later, the lead was 22. The Blazers had nothing, and they were getting destroyed by the recently-woeful Ersan Ilyasova. The Bucks were freely rolling to the wide-open rim for easy layups, and had no problem stopping the Blazers from doing the same. After consecutive Luke Babbitt three-pointers cut the lead to 15, Larry Sanders was ejected, cutting the lead to 12 and taking away one of the Bucks' best defenders. Within seconds, Hickson cut the deficit to 10. Milwaukee stemmed the tide, but Lillard rattled in a three-pointer at the buzzer, cutting the lead to 8.
The Lakers could play better defense.
by Epimenides
Fourth Quarter: The Blazers botched their first four possessions, and the lead was quickly 15 again. After re-digging their hole, they started crawling up again. It's hard though, when you don't make a field goal in the first 5 minutes of the quarter. That's why they needed a timeout, down by 15 yet again. Portland (both the team and the fans) had little left in the tank. The Blazers made a last-ditch comeback attempt, hitting multiple three's to cut the lead to 4 with 45 seconds left. After a Bucks turnover, Aldridge was tripped on the inbound pass, but the refs missed it, and it caused a turnover. That was the straw that broke the camel's back, as there would be no miracle comeback afterward.

Pacific and televised locally on KGW TV. Note that "interesting" is distinct from "good" here. Mind you, the Bucks aren't bad. They sit at 20-18 on the year with identical 10-9 records at home and on the road, good for 7th position in the Eastern Conference. They'll almost certainly remain a playoff team. But the real attraction in watching the Bucks is the wonderfully weird Frankenstein way in which they've been constructed. Every time they tip I feel the urge to scream, "It's ALIVE!!!" Consider: Their starting backcourt consists of two undersized maybe-sorta-could-be point guards both known for their scoring. Brandon Jennings has been a Buck his whole career. He's not a great shooter, he's just great at getting his shots up. He's averaging 18 a game on 41% shooting with 6 assists per game. His partner Monta Ellis, refugee from Golden State, averages 19 points on 40% shooting with 5 assists per game. The big difference between Ellis now and at the height of his production is his nose-diving three-point percentage (25% this season). Both are mediocre defenders at best. Both rely on the jump shot as their primary way of scoring. In most ways they're similar: high-volume, low-production, point-accumulating jump shooters. Then you have one of last year's better, unheralded power forwards in Ersan Ilyasova. The guy did a little of everything and did it well. He has range out to three-point line. He rebounds. He's a decent defender. With a 20+ PER, 58% true shooting percentage, and an offensive rating through the roof the guy looked like he could break out big time. Then he signed a new contract. Now his shooting percentage is down to 40% from last year's 49%. His rebounding, three-point percentage, and points per minute stats are in the toilet. Last year's near-star now looks slightly below average. Ex-coach Scott Skiles reduced his minutes and sent him to the bench. He's been slowly resuscitated now that Skiles is gone, but this is just a weird season for him. Meanwhile, while Blazers fans mull over the possibility of finding one legit 7-footer, the Bucks have stocked up. Larry Sanders is a good defender, a shot-blocker, and handles his few shot attempts well. Samuel Delambert is the rebounder-shot-blocking veteran off the bench. The Bucks aren't even using ex-Trail Blazer Joel Przybilla (errr...perhaps for good reason). No matter what else goes right or wrong in a game, the Bucks can count on their men in the middle to perform their limited tasks well. Forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute has been a nice energy/glue guy over the years. The problem this year is that, like Ilyasova, LRMaM's offensive production has tanked. His shooting percentages are way down, rebounds have slipped as well. Turnovers are up. For a quiet contributor on the borders of average to begin with, this is an issue. Dependability sauced with occasional opportunism have been his hallmarks. Not so much this season. Reserve point guard Beno Udrih hasn't had any such problems. He's having a career year (and is one of the players I've thought would make a good Blazer for years). Small forward Mike Dunleavy is getting plenty of minutes and is shooting well. Shooting guard Marquis Daniels has never fulfilled his promise, having designs on offensive dominance without the acumen to actually get there. The bench--outside of the excellent Udrih--isn't bad as much as mercurial. Some nights they're going to spark and give you a great game. Other nights they're half there, sometimes not at all. Did we mention the Bucks are 20-18 with identical 10-9 records at home and on the road? The Bucks like to break and force turnovers. They're not bad offensive rebounders either. All of that adds up to the extra possessions on which they depend to make up for their overall lack of field goal shooting. They're bad from the field, bad from the arc, and not so great at drawing fouls. They need a lot of tries to get points on the board. The big dangers in the Milwaukee offense are that they'll run for easy points or get streaky hot. You can't do much when the latter happens but the Blazers would be well-served by getting back in transition to prevent the former. Unfortunately for the Bucks they give up to their opponents everything they win in transition and more. Neither are they great paint defenders as a team. Their defense gets better the farther you move away from the bucket, not necessarily because their smalls are great individual defenders but because they can close quickly and because by definition shooting deep means you let their defenders stay in front of you instead of just blowing past them. When you drive on those perimeter defenders you're going to get a good look or foul shots. As mentioned, the Bucks love to force turnovers. Their gambling ways often take them away from the boards, though. Their defensive rebounding is poor. The Blazers should be reading this tableau and coming up with some pretty clear conclusions. Get back on "D", make the Bucks settle for the jump shots they love. On the other end drive past them, create chaos, and get your jumpers off of penetration instead of just lofting them. Hit the offensive rebounds hard. As long as you also take care of the ball you'll get more quality shots than they will and the game is yours. It's not rocket surgery. Then again, the Blazers have come out flat and careless in plenty of games lately. Let the Bucks get a head of steam and they do have enough offensive talent to take this game. Their scoring comes in fits and starts but when it comes, it comes hard. This is another game that should be in Portland's control. Whether they're willing to seize it is another matter. They're already in a skid. Dropping a game to the Bucks at home would turn that skid into a free-fall. The ship needs righting. We'll see if the Blazers can manage to do it.
